Step By Step Guide
Initiating the Traffic Stop:
Activate Lights and Takedown: Switch your vehicle’s lights to Code 2 and signal the driver to pull over to the right side of the road. Position your vehicle at a slight angle behind the stopped vehicle.
Notify Dispatch: Inform dispatch that you are initiating a 10-38 (traffic stop). Provide your location, the vehicle description, the number of occupants, and whether you require backup.
Pre-Approach Checks:
Run Plate: Before approaching the vehicle, check the license plate for any active warrants or BOLO (Be On the Look Out) alerts.
Approaching the Vehicle:
Approach Safely: Approach the vehicle from the driver’s side. Identify yourself as a member of the Los Santos Police Department, provide your badge number, and request that the driver turn off the engine.
Initial Interaction: Ask the driver if they understand why they were pulled over and explain the reason for the stop.
Document Verification:
Request Identification: Ask the driver for their identification. Return to your patrol vehicle to run their information, checking for any warrants and ensuring it matches the vehicle registration.
Finalizing the Stop:
Complete the Stop: Once verification is complete and no issues are found, return the driver’s documentation and issue any necessary citations.
Resume Patrol: Notify dispatch that the traffic stop is clear (Code 4) you are 10-8 (available for calls) and resume patrol duties.
Contingency Procedures:
If the Driver is Wanted: Radio for backup and initiate a Code 5 stop (felony stop) to handle the situation safely.
If the Driver Fails to Stop: Inform dispatch that a pursuit has started, and proceed with Code 3 lights and sirens.
If the vehicle is without a visible license plate/tag officer must request the vehicle information from the driver.
